Tiller Fence and Deck: Custom Pergola Builder for Oklahoma City, OK

Tiller Fence and Deck is the veteran-owned pergola builder Oklahoma City homeowners call when the patio gets too hot to use. We design cedar, pressure-treated, aluminum, and steel pergolas, plus patio covers and covered porches, for homes in Putnam Heights, Jefferson Park, the Lake Overholser area, and the additions along the John Kilpatrick Turnpike. Each frame is drawn for its own yard, never pulled from a kit, by a family business putting up outdoor structures here since 2006.

Shade That Fits Your OKC Backyard

A west-facing patio in Oklahoma City can bake in direct sun from midafternoon until close to sunset in July. A pergola with the right rafter spacing, a retractable canopy, or a solid patio cover changes how many evenings you actually spend outside. Luke Tiller himself or an estimator from our team will watch where the shadow falls, measure the space, and price the job in writing at no charge. Reach us day or night at (405) 784-4424 and ask for your free on-site estimate.

Pergolas and Patio Covers Throughout Oklahoma City

Looking for a pergola builder in Oklahoma City? Tiller Fence and Deck designs and builds pergolas sized to your patio, pool deck, or lawn, with no kits and no stock dimensions. We work in cedar, pressure-treated lumber, aluminum, and steel, in traditional or contemporary styles, either attached to the house or standing on their own posts. Open-roof pergolas throw a dappled shade. When you want a dry, fully shaded spot, we add a retractable canopy, polycarbonate panels, or solid roofing, and we can wire in lights and hang ceiling fans while the frame is still open.

Our founder, Luke Tiller, is a veteran who opened the business in 2006, and he still shows up for estimates and checks on crews in the field. Since 2017 Tiller has served as The Home Depot’s exclusive fence and deck installer for 16 Oklahoma stores, a program that keeps our carpenters building outdoor projects all year. We are licensed, bonded, and insured. Tiller employees, not hired subcontractors, cut and raise every beam, and each finished pergola or patio cover is covered by our one-year promise on workmanship.

Oklahoma City is big enough that its backyards vary a lot. A 1920s home near Classen Boulevard may have a narrow lot, a detached garage, and a pecan or elm shading half the yard, while a two-story house in a newer addition looks out on bare lawn and HOA covenants about roof color. We plan post layout, roof pitch, and finish around what is already there. If an open pergola will not keep off enough sun and rain, ask us to price a covered patio with a gable or hip roof and a tongue-and-groove ceiling.

Pergola Projects From the Urban Core to the Edges of OKC

Our crews put up shade structures in every corner of Oklahoma City. In Putnam Heights (73118), the large historic homes on Putnam Heights Boulevard sit just off Classen Boulevard, and an attached cedar pergola tends to suit their brick and stucco. Jefferson Park, a few blocks from Oklahoma City University, is full of bungalows where a compact freestanding frame fits the back corner of the lot. Out west, houses near Lake Overholser in 73127 take wind straight off the water, and the subdivisions off the John Kilpatrick Turnpike in far northwest OKC often have a plain concrete slab that is waiting for a roof.

Summers here regularly reach 100 degrees, and the harshest sun arrives from the west and southwest late in the day. Spring adds hail and straight-line gusts, and the red clay under most lots swells when wet and pulls back when it dries. So we size concrete footings for the full roof load and for the uplift a storm can put on it, anchor every post to its footing, and space and angle the rafters to cut the low western sun. Where hail worries you most, we suggest polycarbonate panels or the Hercules Shield system, rated for hail up to 3/4 inch and sustained wind up to 125 mph.

Each lot type points toward a different build. A west-facing slab behind a ranch house is the classic spot for an attached pergola with a retractable shade, so the glare is gone by dinner. Pool yards in the northwest additions do well with a freestanding pergola on the far side of the water, where swimmers can dry off out of the sun. Lake lots near Overholser call for heavier steel or timber posts and a roof that sheds wind. Older homes under mature trees often need only a light open frame, and HOA neighborhoods get a design checked against their covenants before anything is ordered.

Oklahoma City requires a permit to construct, alter, repair, or enlarge any primary or accessory structure, so we treat pergolas and patio covers as permit work and file it ourselves. Under the city zoning code, accessory structures generally cannot sit in the required front yard, and detached accessory buildings belong behind the rear wall of the house and no taller than it. On lots of an acre or more, detached buildings keep a 25-foot side and rear setback. The historic preservation districts, Putnam Heights and Jefferson Park among them, also need a certificate of approval for new construction. Before footings go in, we call OKIE811 to get buried lines marked.

Chosen by The Home Depot As Its Oklahoma Installer

In 2017 The Home Depot picked Tiller Fence and Deck as the exclusive fence and deck installer for 16 Oklahoma stores. That program runs on the same in-house carpenters and scheduling we bring to every Oklahoma City pergola and patio cover.

Custom Wood Pergolas

A cedar or pressure-treated pergola, cut and assembled on your property and finished with stain or sealer to stand up to Oklahoma City sun. Wood allows shaped rafter tails, deeper beams, and a warm color that suits older homes near Classen Boulevard as well as new construction.

Aluminum & Steel Pergolas

Aluminum and steel pergolas for homeowners who would rather never stain anything again. The clean lines suit contemporary houses in the newer Oklahoma City additions, and a metal frame will not rot, check, or need resealing through humid springs and dry summers.

Attached Pergolas

A pergola tied into the wall or roofline of your house so the shade begins right at the back door. It is the go-to build for Oklahoma City patios that face west, and we fasten and flash the ledger carefully so the connection stays tight and dry.

Freestanding Pergolas & Pavilions

Pergolas and timber pavilions standing on their own footings, out where you actually spend time: beside the pool, over a fire pit, or on a deck at the back of the lot. Freestanding builds make sense on wide Oklahoma City lots where shade from the house never reaches.

Shades, Lighting & Fans

Retractable shades pull across on the hottest Oklahoma City afternoons and fold back when you want to see the stars. We also run lighting and mount ceiling fans on pergolas and patio covers, so the space stays usable after dark and on still, muggy July evenings.

Patio Covers

Covered Decks & Porches

Add a roof over a deck or porch you already have, or build both at once. Covering the deck keeps boards out of direct sun, makes summer afternoons bearable, and gives your Oklahoma City home a sheltered spot to sit while spring rain moves through.

Most of our Oklahoma City work comes from neighbors who saw a finished project and asked who built it. Those referrals and online reviews mean the most to us, and the industry recognition shown below is something we value too, earned over nearly two decades of outdoor building.

Framed for Hail, Heat, and Plains Wind

A pergola in central Oklahoma has a lot to handle in a single year: triple-digit afternoons, hail that tears up flimsy shade fabric, and gusts that try to lift anything with a roof. We answer with concrete footings, heavy posts, tight connections, and roofing picked for your exposure. If an older shade structure in your yard is leaning, leaking, or missing panels after a storm, call and we will tell you plainly whether replacing it makes sense.

Tiller Fence and Deck was by far the best price on a pergola project we did. We got 4 different quotes, and they also got the bid back to us the very next day. They were very fast to respond, on time through the entire project and did an absolutely fantastic job on our project. We highly recommend Tiller Fence and Deck. #1 company in Oklahoma.

I cannot rate Luke Tiller and his crew high enough for what they did at our residence. This was a big-big job. Totally rebuilding a balcony, massive pergola, decking tongue and groove ceilings. They were professional, craftsman, respectful, and delivered more than I had expected. They delivered the wow factor and I couldn't be happier.

Wood or Trex Composite: Choosing Your Deck Material

For a new Oklahoma City deck, the choice between wood and composite mostly comes down to upkeep. Pressure-treated wood typically lasts 15 to 20 years with proper care, while Trex composite is expected to last 25 to 30 years or more and never needs sealing or staining. We handle the permits, and every deck carries a one-year workmanship guarantee.

How to Pick a Fence and Deck Contractor in OKC

Before you sign with anyone, ask four things: are they licensed, bonded, and insured; do their own crews do the work; is there a written workmanship guarantee; and who pulls the permit. Our answers are yes, yes, one year, and us, and every job ends with a walkthrough before the crew leaves.

Repair, Restain, or Replace Your Wood Fence?

A leaning fence or a few bad boards doesn’t always mean starting over. We repair posts and sections when the damage is local, and staining and sealing can add years to a sound fence. When the whole run is failing, we’ll tell you straight that a new fence is the better spend.

What Oklahoma City Homeowners Ask About Pergolas

What goes into the price of a pergola or patio cover in OKC?

Pergola cost comes down to a handful of choices. Size and height set how much lumber or metal goes in. Cedar usually runs more than pressure-treated wood, and aluminum or steel pricing depends on the system. An open roof is the lightest option, while poly panels, solid roofing, or a full patio cover add framing and labor. Attached builds need a ledger on the house, and freestanding ones need more footings. Every one of those items is listed separately in your written quote.

From signed quote to finished pergola, how long does it take?

The construction itself is usually short. A typical open pergola goes up within a few days once materials arrive, and a patio cover with roofing and a wood ceiling takes longer. The bigger variables are the Oklahoma City permit review, the OKIE811 locate, special-order items like metal systems or shades, and rain. You get a target start date along with your quote, and we call you if weather pushes it back.

What does Oklahoma City require for a pergola permit and setbacks?

The City of Oklahoma City requires a building permit to construct or enlarge any accessory structure, so plan on a pergola permit for patio covers too. The zoning code generally keeps accessory structures out of the required front yard and places detached accessory buildings behind the rear wall of the house, no taller than the house itself. Lots of an acre or more carry a 25-foot side and rear setback for detached buildings. We confirm the specifics for your lot and file the paperwork.

Wood or aluminum: which pergola suits an Oklahoma City home?

A cedar pergola has the warm look many people want around older homes, and it can be stained to match the trim, though it needs resealing every few years in this sun. An aluminum pergola or steel frame skips that upkeep and fits modern exteriors. If shade and rain protection matter more to you than an open look, a solid patio cover is the better fit. We bring samples and talk through all three at the estimate.

Do you build pergolas in my part of Oklahoma City?

Very likely. Our crews build across the city, from Putnam Heights, Jefferson Park, and the Shepherd district in the urban core to the Lake Overholser area on the west side and the additions along the John Kilpatrick Turnpike in far northwest OKC, then down through south Oklahoma City. We also build pergolas and patio covers in the nearby cities of Edmond, Yukon, Moore, and Norman, each a separate town with its own permit office. Anywhere in the metro, we come to you.

Can I spread the cost of a pergola over time?

Yes. Pergola financing is available through Wells Fargo Outdoor Solutions, including 0% APR for 24 months on approved credit. Plenty of Oklahoma City homeowners use it to add the roof, fans, or lighting now instead of coming back for them later. Ask about it at your free estimate and we will walk you through the application.
